2026 Flag Day Celebration

On February 15, 1965, Canada adopted the red and white maple leaf flag; a flag that unites our country through challenges and joy. The process wasn’t without challenges, but today our flag is recognized worldwide as a symbol of democracy, human right and peace.

On the same day, in 1996, Flag Day was declared for the first time in Canada. Former MP Jesse Flis was instrumental in our country celebrating Flag Day – Mr. Flis recently passed away, but his legacy lives on as we celebrate our flag.

Recently in Ottawa, Parliamentarians gathered at an event hosted by the Speaker of the House of Commons, to recognize Flag Day. MPs Alexandra Mendès, Scott Aitchison, Gord Johns and Elizabeth May co-hosted the event and spoke about the importance of our flag and the national pride which it brings to each and every one of us.

At the Pearson Centre, Flag Day holds special significance. Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson said, as the flag was raised the first time: “May the land over which this new flag flies remain united in freedom and justice … sensitive, tolerant and compassionate towards all.”
