Tara Singh Hayer
Hayer, born in India and an immigrant to Canada in the 1970s, worked as a miner, teacher, truck driver and journalist before establishing the Indo-Canadian Times, which became the largest, oldest Punjabi-language newspaper in Canada, and the leading in North America. After reporting about tensions between the government of India and Sikhs about separatist values, and extremist terrorist acts like the Air India Flight Bombing in 1985, Hayer began to speak out against violence within the Sikh separatist movement, condemning violence in all forms. After an assassination attempt in 1988 which left Hayer paralyzed and using a wheelchair, he was murdered in 1998. Hayer has received many awards for using his voice as an opponent of terrorism, including being added to the Canadian News Hall of Fame, making him the first non-English, non-French origin Canadian to be added for his bravery and impact.
