Samuel William “Sam” Jacobs
Jacobs, a Canadian lawyer, and the only Jewish MP in the Canadian government for many years, was a prominent community leader in the Jewish community. He and Lyon Cohen, the founder of B’nai Brith Canada, and others founded the Jewish Times, the first English language Jewish newspaper in Canada in 1897. Jacobs contributed to the establishing of the Canadian Jewish Congress, founded in 1919, where he served as the organizations first president. Under his guidance, the Canadian Jewish Congress emerged as a leading voice for the Jewish community in Canada, combatting anti-Semitism and promoting social justice.
