R. Douglas Elliot

R. Douglas Elliott, a trailblazing LGBTQ+ rights lawyer, has been pivotal in advancing equality and justice in Canada. He led the LGBT Purge class action, securing a $145M settlement for federal employees, RCMP members, and armed forces personnel systematically discriminated against from the 1950s to 1990s. Elliott’s landmark cases include securing CPP survivor pensions for same-sex partners and establishing sexual orientation as a protected ground under the Charter. A bold advocate for human rights, he has also fought against censorship and customs targeting LGBTQ+ materials, inspiring generations of social justice lawyers.
