Marlene Catterall
A former politician, Catterall played a key role in advancing gender equity in Canada. She was the first woman to serve as Chief Government Whip, paving the way for women’s participation in decision-making roles. Dedicated to empowering underprivileged women, she established programs providing grocery assistance, restaurant initiatives, and computer skills training. Catterall’s advocacy led to the reinstatement of a cut computer training program. She prioritized resolving gender equity issues through Parliament, securing a landmark agreement on pay equity in the public service. Additionally, Marlene’s efforts led to the unanimous approval for the installation of the Famous Five monument on Parliament Hill, commemorating women’s fight for recognition in the Senate.
