Juana Tejada

Juana Tejada (1969–2009), a caregiver and activist from the Philippines, became a catalyst for change in Canada’s immigration policies. After arriving in 2003 under the Live-in Caregiver Program (LCP), she faced denial of permanent residency due to a cancer diagnosis. Her case inspired a grassroots campaign that highlighted the systemic challenges faced by caregivers. This advocacy led to the “Juana Tejada Law,” eliminating the second medical exam requirement for caregivers applying for residency. Tejada’s legacy continues to influence immigrant rights and improve conditions for foreign caregivers in Canada.
