Jean Lumb

A Chinese Canadian activist, Lumb came into advocacy through her and her husband’s Chinese restaurant business. Lumb quickly became involved in various community organizations and initiatives aimed at addressing challenges faced by Chinese Immigrants in Canada. One of Lumb’s most notable achievements was her successful campaign to repeal the Chinese Exclusion Act, a discriminatory law that banned Chinese immigration to Canada by lobbying government officials and organizing grassroots efforts to raise awareness about the unjust nature of the law and it’s impact on Chinese families. Lumb also played a key role in establishing the Chinese Canadian National Council, an organization dedicated to advancing the interests of Chinese Canadians and combating racism and discrimination. Her activism ultimately shaped Toronto’s Chinatown and her story shows us the importance of community, and how food can play a role in building meaningful cross-cultural connections.
