Bernice Carnegie
An advocate for racial equality and inclusion in sport, Carnegie worked tirelessly to combat racism in hocket, co-founding the Future Aces Hockey School in the 1950s to provide opportunities for Black youth to participate in hocket. Her efforts helped break down barriers and pave the way for greater diversity in Canada’s national pastime. Carnegie is part of the groundbreaking BIPOC ownership of a professional women’s hockey team, the Toronto Six, as of 2021. As the co-founder and president of the Carnegie Initiative, an organization named after her father, on a mission to make hockey accessible, inclusive and diverse. The Carnegie Initiative also created a documentary, Beyond Their Years, focused on her father, Herb Carnegie and another Black athlete, Buck O’Neil who were both excluded because of their race, from competing at the highest professional leagues of the sports they loved.
