Art Miki

Born in British Columbia, Miki was among 22,000 Japanese Canadians who were displaced and interned during World War II, with his family being forced to leave their fruit farm near Vancouver when he was a child. Having focused much of his career as a teacher and school principal, Miki has been committed to education for his lifetime. He is president of the Asian Heritage Society of Manitoba that organizes Asian Heritage Month activities. Miki was president of the National Association of Japanese Canadians when he led the negotiations that resulted in the Canadian government formally apologizing and providing compensation to survivors of the internment camps. Today, he continues his advocacy having been Citizenship Judge for Manitoba and Saskatchewan until 2008, and lecturing at the University of Winnipeg in the Faculty of Education
