Abraham Beverley Walker

Abraham Beverley Walker was Canada’s first Black lawyer and a trailblazing anti-racist advocate. Born in New Brunswick in 1851, he faced discrimination but remained committed to justice. Despite challenges, Walker was active in Saint John’s African Methodist Episcopal Church and federal politics. He was an advocate for Black empowerment, founding Neith, a public affairs magazine, and publishing works on race relations. He also supported the African Civilization Movement, promoting opportunities for Black professionals. In 2019, he was posthumously awarded the Order of New Brunswick for his contributions to law and civil rights.
