The Pearson Centre is proud to announce that The Honourable Jean Augustine, P.C., C.M., OOnt, CBE, has been named the 2026 recipient of the Pearson Laureate Award. She receives this honour in recognition of her extraordinary leadership, lifelong commitment to public service, and enduring contributions to equity, education, and social justice in Canada and beyond. The award will be presented at The Pearson Centre’s Annual Laureate Dinner in Ottawa on June 1, 2026.
Augustine is a trailblazer in Canadian public life. In 1993, she became the first Black woman elected to Canada’s House of Commons, where she helped advance landmark initiatives promoting multiculturalism, gender equity, and youth opportunity. She later served as Parliamentary Secretary to Prime Minister Jean Chrétien and as Minister of State for Multiculturalism and the Status of Women.
The Pearson Laureate Award recognizes individuals whose work reflects the values of leadership, diplomacy, public service, and a deep commitment to strengthening democratic societies. Augustine’s legacy embodies these ideals through decades of advocacy, mentorship, and transformative impact in communities across the country.
“Jean Augustine’s extraordinary work has inspired generations of Canadians and continues to shape a more inclusive and compassionate Canada,” said Pam Damoff, CEO of The Pearson Centre. “Whether as an educator, politician, or social justice advocate, Augustine always places the humanity of others first, embodying the very foundation on which The Pearson Centre’s work rests.”
“With 2026 marking the 30th Anniversary of Black History Month, this is the perfect time to honour Jean. Black History Month is a celebration held every February as a result of Jean’s extraordinary leadership bringing a motion to the House of Commons.”, said Kevin Bosch, Chair of the Board, The Pearson Centre.
The award presentation will take place during The Pearson Centre’s 2026 Annual Laureate Dinner to be held at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, which brings together community leaders, policymakers, and other guests to celebrate leadership and public service. Tickets will be available soon.
