Canadian Tax Policy and the Trump Agenda: Conference Call
By
Many will say that our tax policy works well for Canada, with some tweaks always needed. It is balanced and internationally competitive. But our system could be rocked shortly by comparatively radical reductions in corporate and personal income tax rates for the U.S. as announced by President Donald Trump. This could take a few months to take effect, but now is the time for Canada to consider what changes, if any, we need to consider.
The Pearson Centre is launching a year-long project at this event, to consider many key aspects of this question in an effort to put forward a Canada-First Tax Policy, one that is made in Canada and works well for Canada from a domestic and international perspective. Other tax issues such as the recently proposed changes for private companies are also up for discussion. This project is part of the Centre’s Econ4Tmro priority, addressing issues such as innovation, infrastructure, immigration, energy and environment and the future of work.
Lead-off speakers will include:
-Craig Wright, Senior Vice President and Chief Economist, RBC
-Sandra Pupatello, Chairperson of the Pearson Centre and former Economic Development and Trade Minister in Ontario
-Commentary: Iris Evans, Former Alberta Finance Minister
The roundtable will be chaired by:
-Peter Donolo, Vice Chairman, Hill+Knowlton Strategies Canada
Three members of the House of Commons Finance Committee from the GTA will participate and provide closing comments on their response to ideas put forward:
-Raj Grewal MP (Brampton East)
-Jennifer O’Connell, MP (Pickering-Uxbridge) and
-Francesco Sorbara, MP (Vaughan-Woodbridge).
-Plus: Ali Ehsassi, MP (Willowdale)
