Pearson Centre 2024 Leadership Awards Salute Organized Labour in Toronto
On October 30, 2024, the Pearson Centre proudly recognized organized labour for its leadership in advancing and enshrining positive, progressive social change in Canada.
At a sold-out gala event at One King West in Toronto the Centre saluted the pioneering role unions have played in advancing equal opportunity; reducing barriers to participation; fighting for fair wages, job security and safe, inclusive workplaces; for leadership on equity, diversity and inclusion; and for providing opportunities for training and retraining so that all workers have the right to good jobs and rewarding careers. Progressive societies around the world have always followed labours’ lead.
Four of Canada’s foremost labour organizations, represented by their outstanding leaders were honoured with a Pearson Centre Leadership Award. Accepting the awards on behalf of their organizations were: David Bulmer, President and CEO of AMAPCEO, Ontario’s Professional Employees Union; Linda Silas, President, CFNU, the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions; Sean Strickland, Executive Director, CBTU, Canada’s Building Trades Unions; and René Jansen in de Wal, President, OECTA, Ontario’s English Catholic Teachers.
Following the award presentations those attending were provided with an engaging and lively armchair discussion between the four honourees, which was moderated by former international and Canadian media personality and Pearson Centre Vice-Chair, Indira Naidoo-Harris.
