Pearson: a party, caucus and cabinet full of contradictions
Par Stephen Azzi
Lester Pearson’s approach to leadership must be at the centre of any effort to understand his government’s relationship with nationalists and with the left. A democrat and a pluralist, Pearson’s approach was to bring together individuals from a wide range of viewpoints and then mediate the conflicts that resulted inevitably from the dynamic he had created. With the help of many others, he built a party, a caucus, and a cabinet full of contradictions, composed of individuals of different – often incompatible – views.
Stephen Azzi is Associate Professor in the Clayton H. Riddell Graduate Program in Political Management and the Department of History, Carleton University. He is author of Walter Gordon and the Rise of Canadian Nationalism. This text is based on a presentation he gave to a conference entitled “The Pearson Government: 50 Years on,” hosted by the Bill Graham Centre for the Study of Contemporary International History at the University of Toronto, April 2013.
