UNDERSTANDING THE BRITISH ELECTION

UNDERSTANDING THE BRITISH ELECTION

  • Date: May 14, 2015, 12:00 am to
  • For more information:

briefing on the
British Election
Friday, May 8, 2015
8:30 am: Registration; 9:00 am to 10:30 am: Panel discussion

Lauren Dobson-Hughes, Former political staffer at Westminster (Labour) and Parliament Hill (NDP)
Roy Sengupta. Student, Carleton University
Jim Miller, Former political staffer and adviser to the Scottish Lib-Dems and Parliament Hill (Conservatives)
David Slinn, Former British Ambassador/Diplomat

Some of the observations:
– David Cameron ran a strong campaign with a strong strain of attack on Labour that they would be beholden to the Scottish National Party, and Labour had not done enough to re-think what they needed to do to reform and prepare for the election.
Major issues facing Britain
– the future of Scotland and the nature of the UK – would federalism be in the cards or devolution of powers – how would England work in that scenario. Will Scotland have another referendum
– Cameron has committed to hold a referendum on the UK’s participation in the EU. He is not for leaving, but it will give oxygen to UKIP which was almost shut out. If they leave will the EU fall apart.
